meadow creek park vision plan

The Upper Cumberland is defined by its land and people. The hills, valleys, rivers, creeks, and forests have been deeply embedded in the culture of this community for generations. On the same ground that once harbored a profitable coal mine, this site has again become one of the community’s greatest assets. The land was purchased by the town of Monterey in the late 1980s from a developer, as a secondary water source with its 100 acres creek, dam, and surrounding 200 acres of forest. The transformational history of this land from extraction to infrastructure, land conservation, and now shared public park, is a story of forward-thinking town leaders.

The Meadow Creek Park vision plan was commissioned in 2021, building upon an earlier 2015 mapping. The central themes of the 2021 vision plan are community, ecology, and recreation, which will positively impact public health, the economy, and the creative adaptation of existing public infrastructure. Programming within the park includes hiking/biking trails, wilderness camping, an observation tower, designated rock-climbing sites, kayak and boat rentals, ecological management and education, and a fishing pier.
